Sandhill Cranes Put On Parenting Show For Onlookers In Grand Teton National Park

Visitors to Grand Teton National Park got an unexpected front-row seat to a family drama this week, as a pair of sandhill cranes guided their young through the basics of survival. The birds, known for their loud, rolling calls and rusty gray feathers, put on what one bystander called a "masterclass in parenting" near a marshy meadow along the park's popular loop road.

The adult cranes took turns leading their two chicks on short, stumbling runs before flapping their broad wings to demonstrate takeoff. The youngsters, still sporting the brownish down of their first summer, copied the moves with wobbly legs and frequent pauses. At one point, one adult lifted off for a brief, low glide, landed, and then turned back to nudge the slower chick forward. Onlookers watched quietly through binoculars and telephoto lenses, keeping a respectful distance.

Park officials say this kind of behavior is typical for sandhill cranes, which are devoted parents. Chicks stay with their parents for nearly a year, learning to find food, avoid predators, and navigate migration routes. The family in Grand Teton appears to be on schedule for the fall journey south, with the young birds already practicing the wing flaps that will carry them hundreds of miles.

Wildlife experts remind visitors to give the cranes at least a hundred yards of space, as close encounters can stress the birds and interrupt these critical lessons. For now, the show goes on, and the audience seems happy to watch from afar.
