Dry texting: The meaning behind teens’ short texts

Parents who send a long, thoughtful text to their teenager and get back a one-word answer like "k" or "cool" might feel brushed off. But a new report from Verizon's Parenting in a Digital World series suggests that this habit, often called "dry texting," is usually not a sign of disrespect. Instead, it often means the teen is simply busy, distracted, or not in the mood for a long conversation.

The report explains that teens see texting as a quick tool, not a place for deep talks. A short reply can mean they are in class, at a part-time job, or hanging out with friends. It can also mean they read the message but do not have the energy to respond fully right then. Experts say parents should not take it personally. The key is to look at the bigger picture. If the teen still shows up for important talks in person, or answers when something really matters, the dry text is likely just a sign of a busy life, not a cold shoulder.

The report also offers a tip for parents: match the energy. If a teen sends a short reply, a parent can send a short reply back. Saving longer questions for face-to-face time often works better. That way, the text thread stays light, and the real connection happens when everyone is actually together. So next time you get a "yeah" or "sounds good," try not to overthink it. It probably just means they saw your message, they are okay, and they will talk more later.
