The beginning of a new school year often brings a mix of excitement, new routines, and a sense of a fresh start. But for many children and teenagers, the shift from the lazy days of summer back to the structured school environment is not so simple. That transition can trigger real anxiety, and it is not always obvious to parents who are busy with their own back-to-school to-do lists.
Anxiety in kids does not always look like crying or saying "I'm nervous." It can show up as a stomachache every morning, a sudden bout of clinginess, or irritability that seems out of proportion. Younger children might regress, asking for help with things they used to do alone, while teens might withdraw to their rooms, snap at family members, or complain about feeling restless and unable to sleep.
What should parents actually watch for? The key is a change in behavior that lasts more than a couple of days. If your child is fine once they get to school but struggles every single morning, that is a signal. If they are losing sleep, picking at their food, or avoiding friends and activities they used to enjoy, it is worth paying attention to.
The good news is that most back-to-school jitters fade within the first week or two as kids settle into the new rhythm. Experts suggest that parents can help by re-establishing a consistent sleep schedule a few days before school starts, talking openly about what they are worried about, and avoiding the urge to fix everything right away. Just listening and validating their feelings can go a long way.
However, if the anxiety does not ease up, or if it starts to interfere with school attendance, friendships, or daily family life, it may be time to check in with a pediatrician or a school counselor. The goal is not to eliminate all stress, but to help kids build the tools to manage it. A little support now can make a big difference in how they handle the whole school year ahead.
