I used to think sunscreen was mostly a white person's concern. Growing up, I never saw my mother apply it, and the message I absorbed was that darker skin didn't need that kind of protection. I was wrong, and I'm paying for it now with sunspots and a constant fear of what I can't see. So I've made a promise to myself: my kids will learn good sun habits before they even understand why.
The first thing I got wrong was assuming melanin made us invincible. It doesn't. While we have more natural protection than fair skin, that doesn't mean we're safe from skin cancer or premature aging. My dermatologist showed me a UV photo of my own face, and I was shocked at the hidden damage lurking under the surface. That image changed everything for me.
The second mistake was thinking any sunscreen would do. I grabbed whatever was on sale, often with a low SPF and no broad-spectrum coverage. Now I read labels like a hawk. I look for SPF 30 or higher, and I make sure it says "broad spectrum" so it blocks both UVA and UVB rays. I also learned that mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide work better for our skin tone because they don't leave that chalky white cast that used to put me off.
The hardest part is the habit. I was never taught to reapply, so I forgot. Now I set alarms on my phone, and I keep a travel-size bottle in my bag, in the car, and in the diaper bag. My kids see me put it on every morning, and they ask for it themselves now. They think it's a game, but I know it's a shield. I'm not going to let them learn the hard way like I did.
