Digital Shoplifting on the Rise—Here's How Parents Can Talk to Teens About It

Shoplifting used to mean sneaking a shirt out of a store under a baggy coat. Now a teen can pull off the same theft from the couch, a phone in hand, and no one watching. Retailers call it digital shoplifting, and it is spreading quickly through self-checkout lanes and mobile apps.

The trick is simple. A shopper scans a cheap item but walks out with a pricier one. Or they skip scanning an item entirely, pretending it slipped past them. Some use fake barcodes from online forums. Others weigh expensive produce as potatoes. The dollar amounts add up fast, and stores are fighting back with better cameras and AI that flags suspicious patterns.

For parents, the conversation needs to shift from old-school warnings about getting caught to the reality that this is still theft. The screen makes it feel less real, but the law does not care about the method. Teens often see it as a game or a way to stick it to big corporations. They do not think about the consequences, like a permanent record, a ban from the store, or even criminal charges.

Start by asking what they have seen online. Many teens pick up these tricks from social media videos that make it look clever and harmless. Talk about why stores raise prices when shrinkage goes up. It is not just the store that loses, it is every other customer. Keep the tone calm, not accusatory. Ask how they would feel if someone did the same thing to a friend who owned a small shop.

Also, set clear expectations. Let them know you will not cover for them if they get caught, and that you expect honesty even when no one is watching. The goal is not to scare them but to help them see that a digital shortcut is still a real crime with real fallout.
