SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Every parent has a toolbox of strategies to get children to listen, cooperate, or engage. But what if the most effective tool is also the most enjoyable? Experts are increasingly pointing to playful parenting as a powerful approach that builds connection while guiding behavior.
Playful parenting is not about being silly all the time or avoiding discipline. Instead, it uses humor, games, and imagination to transform everyday challenges. A child who refuses to put on shoes might respond to a silly race. A toddler melting down over vegetables could be won over by pretending the broccoli is a dinosaur tree. The goal is to lower resistance by making the task fun rather than a battle.
Research supports this approach. Play reduces stress hormones in both parent and child. It opens the door for cooperation because the child feels seen and connected, not controlled. When a parent gets down on the floor and enters the child's world, trust deepens. That trust makes it easier to set limits later because the child knows the parent is on their side.
Of course, playful parenting takes practice. It asks parents to set aside their own frustration and shift into a creative mindset. But even small moments of play can shift the mood of a whole day. The message is simple: connection before correction, and sometimes the best way to lead is to laugh together.
