Grace Cong Sui grew up in China but later moved to the United States, where she started her own family. When she traveled back to China to visit relatives, she expected a warm reunion. What she did not expect was a sharp reminder of how much her parenting style had shifted since leaving her home country.
During the visit, Sui noticed small but telling differences. In the US, she had learned to let her child explore independently, even if that meant getting messy or making minor mistakes. Back in China, her relatives were more hands-on. They hovered, corrected, and stepped in quickly to prevent any discomfort or failure. Sui found herself caught between two worlds. She appreciated the protective instinct of her family, but she also valued the independence she had cultivated abroad.
The clash was not about right or wrong. It was about deeply ingrained habits shaped by different societies. In the US, Sui absorbed a culture that prizes self-reliance and personal choice from an early age. In China, the emphasis often falls on close supervision and collective responsibility. Neither approach is perfect, but the contrast forced Sui to reflect on what she truly wanted for her child.
She realized that parenting is not a fixed set of rules. It evolves with experience and environment. Her visit home did not change her methods entirely, but it gave her a clearer sense of why she parents the way she does. And it reminded her that family, no matter where they live, always wants what is best for the next generation.
