It became quickly apparent that college was a completely different story than high school. I had spent years perfecting the art of the school drop-off: the quick kiss, the "I packed your lacrosse stick," the casual wave as they slammed the car door. That was easy. That was a routine. But standing in a cramped dorm room, surrounded by twin XL bedding and a mini-fridge that wouldn't fit the leftover lasagna, I felt the ground shift under my feet.

I had always considered myself a supportive parent, not a hovering one. I checked grades online, sure, but I never emailed teachers. I reminded them about deadlines, but I didn't do the projects. So when my son started stacking his textbooks on the shelf, I found myself rearranging them by size. When he said he'd handle the Wi-Fi setup, I was already on the phone with the help desk. I was fixing, organizing, and solving problems he hadn't even asked me to touch.

The moment of truth came when I tried to make his bed. He gently took the fitted sheet from my hands and said, "Mom, I've got it. You can go now." It wasn't mean. It was just clear. In that instant, I saw myself through his eyes: a woman clinging to the last shred of control in a situation where she had none. The drive home was silent. I realized that my anxiety wasn't about his ability to handle college. It was about my inability to handle letting go. The helicopter wasn't circling because he needed rescuing. It was circling because I didn't know how to land.
