Professor Tim Spector, the renowned gut health expert and epidemiologist, has admitted that he and his generation fed their children foods that were "quite bad for them." In a candid reflection, Spector recalled his own upbringing on a diet of meat and two vegetables, a standard British meal pattern that he now views as lacking in diversity and gut-friendly nutrients.
Spector, who lost his father at the age of 21, described himself as a "stroppy teenager" who rebelled against the limited food options of the 1970s. He noted that the post-war generation relied heavily on processed meats, white bread, and sugary treats, believing these were nutritious or at least harmless. Today, his research into the microbiome has shown that such diets can harm gut bacteria, leading to inflammation, weight gain, and chronic disease.
The professor emphasized that parents in the 1980s and 1990s were not intentionally neglectful but were following the best advice available at the time. He now advocates for a wider variety of plant-based foods, fermented items, and whole grains to support children's developing microbiomes. Spector's own parenting journey included mistakes, he admitted, but he hopes his work encourages families to rethink what they put on the table. The key, he says, is not perfection but progress toward feeding kids a richer range of real foods.
