New research from the National University of Singapore suggests that the way parents discipline their children has a direct impact on how honest those children are likely to be. The study challenges the common belief that strict punishment teaches kids to tell the truth. Instead, it found that overly harsh or punitive parenting often backfires.
The researchers observed how children reacted after they misbehaved or told a lie. Kids with parents who used severe scolding or physical punishment were more likely to lie again to avoid further consequences. In contrast, children whose parents focused on calm explanations and discussed why honesty matters were more likely to come clean.
The study points to a key difference in motivation. When a child fears a harsh punishment, the immediate goal becomes self-protection. Lying becomes a survival tactic. But when a parent responds with a focus on understanding and trust, the child feels safer admitting a mistake. Over time, that safety builds a habit of honesty.
The findings do not suggest that parents should avoid discipline altogether. Instead, they recommend a shift in approach. Explaining the impact of a lie, rather than just punishing the lie itself, appears to be more effective. The research adds to a growing body of work showing that fear-based parenting can damage the parent-child relationship and encourage the very behavior parents are trying to stop.
