Having a baby may not come with an instruction manual, but a new and free program hopes to send expectant parents home with something close: a plan. The Board of Health is sponsoring a series of parenting classes, including a new prenatal program that will be free for Marblehead residents.
Expectant parents will learn practical skills for the first months after birth. Topics include infant feeding, safe sleep habits, soothing a crying baby, and recognizing signs of illness. The sessions also cover emotional health, from managing exhaustion to coping with shifts in relationships. Organizers say the goal is to reduce stress and build confidence before the baby arrives.
The classes are designed to connect families with one another. Parents often feel isolated after bringing a newborn home, especially if relatives live far away. By meeting others in the same stage of life, participants can form a support network that lasts well beyond the final session. That sense of community is what organizers describe as building a village.
The prenatal program is open to all Marblehead residents at no cost. Registration is required, and space is limited. The Board of Health encourages both partners to attend when possible. Classes will be held at local community spaces, with daytime and evening options available. Parents who complete the series will leave with a written plan and a list of local resources they can turn to for help.
