The upcoming HBO series 'Rooster,' starring Steve Carell, is finding its humor in the raw, real anxieties of fatherhood. In an exclusive discussion, co-creators Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses revealed the project's deeply personal origins: their own teenage daughters.
Lawrence and Tarses, longtime friends and writing partners, found themselves simultaneously navigating the bewildering transition of their girls into young adulthood. They channeled that shared experience of paternal panic into the show's concept. The series follows a father, played by Carell, who is forced to confront his own stalled life when his adult daughter moves back home.
"We were both in that specific pocket of parenting where you go from being the center of their universe to… well, not," Lawrence shared with a laugh. Tarses added, "It's that moment you realize you're no longer a primary character in their story, but hopefully a beloved recurring guest star." They described the writing process as a therapeutic exercise, transforming universal parental fears into comedic fodder.
The creators emphasized that while the show mines awkwardness and worry for laughs, its heart lies in the enduring, if often clumsy, bond between parent and child. With Carell bringing his signature blend of warmth and comedic distress to the lead role, 'Rooster' aims to be a heartfelt and hilarious portrait of modern family dynamics.
