Protect Young Eyes founder and CEO Chris McKenna wants parents to check more than the apps on a child's device: pay attention to how kids use them and who they connect with. McKenna warns that a "toxic trio" of online dangers is putting children at risk, and the threat often hides in plain sight.
The trio involves location sharing, anonymous messaging, and public profiles that let strangers reach kids directly. McKenna said many parents install parental controls and assume the job is done, but settings alone do not address the behavior behind the screen. Kids may share their location through photo posts, chat with people they have never met, or use apps that wipe messages after they are read, leaving no trace for parents to review.
He encouraged families to have regular, calm conversations about online life rather than relying on surveillance. Ask children who they talk to, what they share, and how they would respond to a stranger's request. McKenna also suggested reviewing privacy settings together and turning off location features on social platforms.
According to McKenna, the goal is not to ban technology but to build awareness. Children who understand why certain features are risky are better equipped to make safe choices when a parent is not watching.
