A parenting strategy known as the "7-7-7 rule" is gaining attention for its potential to reduce disruptive, attention-seeking behavior in children. Proposed by a child psychologist, the method offers a structured alternative to simply telling a child to "stop."
The rule is applied when a child acts out to gain attention. Instead of immediate engagement or reprimand, the parent calmly states they will return to talk in 7 minutes. After this brief pause, the parent spends 7 minutes giving the child their full, positive attention in an activity of the child's choosing. Finally, a 7-minute discussion is held about what prompted the initial behavior and more appropriate ways to communicate needs.
Proponents argue this framework breaks the cycle of negative reinforcement. By delaying attention after negative behavior but then guaranteeing focused, positive connection, it teaches children that patience yields better results than outbursts. It provides a predictable, calm structure for both parent and child to reset and communicate.
However, critics note the approach may not suit every child or situation, particularly with very young children or during severe emotional distress. The rigid timing could feel artificial to some families, and the initial 7-minute wait might be challenging to implement consistently. While a useful tool for reducing low-level attention-seeking, experts caution it is not a one-size-fits-all solution for complex behavioral issues.
