The Walkman gave a generation of children musical independence. Why is it now that the joy of listening to music has become so heavily linked to screen time?

For decades, children could carry music with them without staring at a display. A cassette player, a portable CD player, or an early MP3 device offered a simple promise. Press play, hear a song, and stay present in the world around you. The device did one thing well, and that was enough.

Today, that simplicity has largely disappeared. Most music now lives behind apps, accounts, and recommendation feeds. To hear a single track, a child often has to pick up a phone or tablet. The screen lights up, notifications appear, and the original purpose fades. Listening becomes scrolling. A song becomes a gateway to videos, games, and endless distraction.

Parents notice the shift. What was once a private, audio-only experience now demands attention and supervision. Devices designed for communication and entertainment pull children away from the music itself.

There is no technical reason music must work this way. Small players without screens still exist, yet they feel like relics. The industry pushed toward all-in-one devices, and families followed.

Reclaiming screen-free listening would not require new inventions. It would require remembering that music, at its best, asks only for ears, not eyes.
