Teachers aren’t here to raise your kids. That’s your job

There is a growing habit these days of treating teachers like substitute parents. When a child acts out, falls behind, or shows bad manners, the first call is often to the school principal. But here is the uncomfortable truth: educators are hired to teach reading, math, and science. They are not hired to raise your children.

That job starts and ends at home. If a kid shows up without basic respect for others, without the ability to wait their turn, or without any sense of accountability, that is not a lesson a teacher can fix in forty-five minutes. Schools can reinforce good values, sure. But they cannot build them from scratch when the foundation is missing.

Plenty of parents are quick to blame a bad grade or a suspension on a "bad teacher" or an "unfair system." But what about the hours spent on phones instead of conversations? What about the chores skipped, the bedtimes ignored, the homework checked only when the report card arrives? Those small daily choices shape a child far more than any classroom lecture ever will.

Teachers are stretched thin. They deal with overcrowded rooms, endless paperwork, and constant testing. They do not need another lecture on how to do their job. What they need is for parents to do theirs. That means showing up to conferences, enforcing consequences at home, and modeling the behavior they expect from their kids.

So before you fire off an angry email to the school board, take a hard look at your own kitchen table. Are you raising a child who is ready to learn? Or are you raising one who expects the world to excuse them? The answer usually tells you where the real problem lies.
