OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently floated the idea of using ChatGPT to generate podcasts for children, framing it as a creative way to keep young minds engaged. In a post on social media, Altman suggested that AI-generated audio stories could serve as a modern bedtime or car-ride alternative, tailored to a child's interests and questions. He described the concept as a natural extension of the company's voice features, which already allow users to have spoken conversations with the chatbot.
The proposal, however, did not land as intended. Within hours, the post was flooded with replies from parents, educators, and child development experts who questioned the wisdom of outsourcing storytelling to an algorithm. Many pointed out that children need human interaction, emotional nuance, and the kind of spontaneous creativity that a language model cannot truly replicate. Others raised concerns about screen time, data privacy, and the risk of exposing kids to unvetted content, even with safety filters in place.
The backlash gained extra momentum when animator Alex Hirsch, creator of Gravity Falls, weighed in with a sarcastic and sharply worded response. Hirsch mocked the idea of AI-generated parenting, suggesting that if Altman wanted to help children, he could start by funding public schools or paying artists fairly instead. Hirsch's post quickly outperformed Altman's original in both likes and shares, a clear sign that public sentiment was firmly against the proposal.
Altman has not yet responded to the criticism directly. OpenAI has previously stated that its tools are not designed for children under 13, though the company has been exploring educational uses with age-appropriate safeguards. For now, the podcast idea appears to be shelved, at least publicly, but the debate it sparked highlights a growing unease about how quickly AI is being pushed into personal and family spaces without broader societal consensus.
