Ruto Links School Unrest to Decline of African Parenting

President William Ruto has attributed the recent wave of school unrest across the country to a breakdown in traditional African parenting values. Speaking during a development tour in Meru County, the President called for a return to communal child-rearing practices, which he argued have been eroded by modern lifestyles and external influences.

Ruto stated that many students involved in the destruction of school property and acts of indiscipline lack the moral grounding that was once provided by extended families and community elders. He emphasized that parenting is not solely the responsibility of biological parents but a collective duty shared by neighbors, teachers, and local leaders. According to the President, the decline of this shared responsibility has left children without clear guidance or accountability.

The remarks came as Ruto announced a KSh130 million allocation for school infrastructure improvements in the region. The funds are intended to upgrade classrooms, dormitories, and sanitation facilities in several schools. While the investment aims to improve learning conditions, the President made it clear that physical infrastructure alone cannot solve the deeper behavioral issues affecting students.

He urged parents and guardians to re-engage actively in their children's upbringing, warning that the current trend of unrest could worsen if families continue to neglect their roles. The President also called on religious institutions and community leaders to step in and help restore discipline among the youth. His comments have sparked debate, with some education stakeholders agreeing that parental involvement has weakened, while others argue that school management and government policies also need reform.
