Rethinking the Habit of Yelling at Children

Rethinking the Habit of Yelling at Children

Parenting expert Jenn Dean recently spoke with Dr. Kristen Cook, a pediatrician who understands child development from a professional standpoint as well as the everyday challenges of raising a family. Their conversation focused on a common struggle many parents face: losing patience and raising their voices at their children.

Dr. Cook pointed out that yelling often comes from a place of exhaustion rather than genuine anger. When adults are tired, stressed, or overwhelmed, their ability to regulate their own emotions drops, and the volume rises before they even realize it. She explained that this does not make someone a bad parent. It makes them human.

The two discussed how children respond to shouting. Instead of improving behavior, yelling tends to trigger fear or shutdown. Kids may comply in the moment, but they learn to react out of anxiety rather than understanding. Over time, this can damage trust and make cooperation harder.

One practical tip that emerged was to pause before reacting. Even a few seconds of silence can break the automatic cycle. Stepping away, breathing deeply, or lowering the voice on purpose can shift the entire tone of a tense moment. Dr. Cook also recommended repairing the relationship afterward if a parent does yell. A simple apology shows children that mistakes can be acknowledged and fixed.

Dean and Cook agreed that the goal is not perfection. It is progress, patience, and modeling the calm behavior parents hope to see in their kids.
