NEW YORK CITY - Therapist and author Alli Spotts-DeLazzer appeared on a local morning show to help parents recognize the early signs of eating disorders in children. Spotts-DeLazzer, who wrote the book "My Child Has An Eating Disorder," stressed that parents often miss the warning signs because they look different than what most people expect.
She explained that eating disorders are not just about food. They are serious mental health conditions that can affect children as young as elementary school age. The therapist urged parents to watch for sudden changes in eating habits, extreme concern with body shape or weight, and secretive behavior around meals. She also noted that children might start avoiding family dinners or making excuses to skip meals.
Spotts-DeLazzer emphasized that early intervention is critical. The longer a disorder goes untreated, the harder it is to reverse. She advised parents to trust their instincts. If something feels off, it is better to talk to a pediatrician or a mental health professional right away rather than wait for the problem to become obvious.
The author also warned against blaming parents. Eating disorders are complex and often stem from a mix of genetic, psychological, and social factors. She encouraged families to approach the issue with compassion and to seek specialized treatment rather than trying to handle it alone.
For parents who are unsure where to start, Spotts-DeLazzer recommended reading reliable resources and reaching out to organizations that focus on eating disorder support. The key, she said, is to act early and without shame.
