Parents May Face Benefit Cuts or Jail Time Over Children's Crimes

Parents who fail to control their children could lose their benefits or even face prison under proposed changes to Parenting Orders, a government minister has indicated.

Jake Richards MP told the Times that the reforms are designed to strengthen the consequences for parents whose children repeatedly break the law. The measures would expand the range of penalties available when a Parenting Order is breached, giving courts more power to intervene before a child's behavior escalates further.

Parenting Orders currently require parents to attend counseling sessions or follow specific rules about their child's supervision. Under the new proposals, failure to comply could result in financial penalties, including reductions to welfare payments. In the most serious cases, a custodial sentence could be considered.

The minister argued that parental responsibility sits at the heart of the plan. He said the state cannot replace the role of a parent, and that families must be held accountable when children commit offenses. Support would still be offered to those willing to engage, but repeated refusal to cooperate would carry real consequences.

Critics have raised concerns about punishing families who are already struggling. Some argue that cutting benefits could push households deeper into poverty and make it harder for parents to address the root causes of their children's behavior. Others question whether prison sentences for parents would help or simply destabilize families further.

The government says the changes will be debated in the coming months, with details on how the rules would work in practice expected to follow. For now, the proposal signals a tougher approach to youth crime and the role of parents within it.
