A series of parenting classes will be hosted in Brookings throughout July, aimed at helping parents better understand their children's behaviors. Organized by the Child and Family Resource Network at South Dakota State University, these classes are designed for parents of children from birth to age three. Titled "Understanding Me Up to Age 3," the four-week series will take place at the Pugsley Center, Room 202, every Tuesday from 6-8 p.m., starting July 8 and concluding on July 29. An optional Zoom link will also be available for those who prefer remote participation.
April Flemming, the assistant outreach coordinator, emphasizes the importance of understanding children's behaviors, stating that these actions convey their thoughts, learning, and feelings. The curriculum includes four sessions:
1. Why I Do What I Do – Understanding children's behavior and strategies to foster development.
2. Keep Me Safe – Tips for creating safe environments for children.
3. How I Learn – Tools to encourage a child's natural learning instincts.
4. Help Me Manage My Feelings – Guidance on supporting children through challenging emotional moments.
Parents interested in attending must register by calling or emailing the Child and Family Resource Network. Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate recognized by Court Services and the Department of Social Services.
