Meta Reaches $17 Billion Settlement Over Child Social Media Addiction Lawsuit

Meta Platforms has agreed to pay around $17 billion to resolve a sweeping lawsuit accusing the company of designing Facebook and Instagram to hook young users. The settlement, one of the largest in social media history, covers claims that Meta knowingly exploited children's psychological vulnerabilities to maximize screen time, leading to addiction, mental health harm, and behavioral issues.

The case was brought by a coalition of state attorneys general and private plaintiffs, who argued that Meta ignored internal warnings about the dangers of its algorithms. Documents cited in the lawsuit allegedly showed that company executives were aware that certain features, like infinite scrolling and notification loops, were particularly harmful to teens, yet they chose to keep them in place to boost ad revenue.

Under the terms, Meta will pay the sum over several years, with funds earmarked for youth mental health programs, school-based prevention efforts, and research into online safety. The company did not admit wrongdoing but said it was committed to improving protections for minors. In a statement, Meta noted that it has already introduced parental controls, age verification tools, and stricter content filters in recent years.

Critics argue that the payout, while historic, does little to change the underlying business model. Some advocacy groups say the real fix requires federal legislation that limits how platforms can target minors. Others point out that similar lawsuits against TikTok, Snap, and YouTube are still pending, and this settlement could set a benchmark for those cases.

For now, the deal must still be approved by a federal judge. If finalized, it would mark the first major financial reckoning for a tech giant over child safety, though many families say no amount of money can undo the damage already done.
