At 94 years old, Kay McConaughey is reflecting on the parenting style that shaped her three sons, including Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey. In a recent conversation, she credited a firm, no-nonsense approach for raising men she describes as "loving and productive."
"They turned out to be great men, because the values I gave them they put to use when they left," Kay said. She emphasized that her old-school methods were rooted in respect, accountability, and hard work rather than permissiveness. "I didn't try to be their friend. I was their mother. There was a line, and they knew not to cross it," she explained.
Kay raised her boys in a small Texas town, where she taught them to make their own beds, show up on time, and treat others with decency. She believes that today's parents often overcomplicate discipline. "You don't need a book for every age. You need consistency and love with a backbone," she added.
Her philosophy stands in contrast to modern trends of gentle parenting, but Kay remains unapologetic. "They knew I loved them, but they also knew I meant what I said. That gave them security," she said. Now, watching her sons navigate their own families and careers, she feels her work paid off. "They are good fathers, good husbands, good men. That is the only report card I need."
