I Let My Son Say No to Tracking and It Changed How I Parent

I grew up with a level of freedom that would make most modern parents flinch. I rode my bike across town without a phone, came home when the streetlights flickered on, and never once had a parent check my exact coordinates. Supervision existed, but it was loose, trusting, and largely invisible. When I became a parent myself, I assumed I would raise my kids the same way. Then the world changed, and so did I.

Somewhere along the line, I downloaded the tracking app. I told myself it was about safety, about knowing my son was okay. But when my 13-year-old found out and told me he did not want to be followed, I felt a flash of anger. Then I felt something worse: the realization that I had become the kind of parent I once would have rolled my eyes at.

He was not hiding anything. He was asking for the same thing I had as a teenager: room to move through the world without someone watching every turn. The app was not protecting him from danger. It was protecting me from my own anxiety.

I deleted it. Not because I stopped caring, but because I remembered that growing up means letting go, one small step at a time.
