Gaming helps mums recover from parenting stress – but guilt can still get in the way

A recent study highlights a surprising source of relief for mothers overwhelmed by the demands of parenting: video games. Researchers found that gaming provides a meaningful escape from daily stress, helping mums recharge, develop new skills, and experience a sense of accomplishment. However, the same study reveals a persistent barrier that keeps many women from fully enjoying this pastime-guilt.

The research indicates that while gaming offers cognitive benefits and a much-needed mental break, mothers often struggle to carve out time for it. Domestic labour and childcare duties remain the primary obstacles, leaving many women feeling that any time spent playing is time stolen from their responsibilities. This guilt can undermine the very stress relief that gaming is meant to provide.

Participants in the study described gaming as a way to reclaim a small piece of identity outside of motherhood. They valued the challenge, the social connections in online communities, and the simple joy of focusing on a goal unrelated to household chores. Yet, the pressure to be constantly available for children and partners often cuts play sessions short or prevents them from starting at all.

The findings suggest that while gaming can be a powerful tool for maternal wellbeing, societal expectations and unequal distribution of domestic work still create a significant gap between the desire to play and the ability to do so guilt-free.
