Co-parenting? Here’s how to create healthier digital boundaries across two homes

When parents live apart, the rules around screens, phones, and social media can become a major source of friction. One home might allow unlimited gaming, while the other enforces strict time limits. A child may have a phone at one house but not the other. These differences are common, but they don't have to cause constant conflict. The key is building digital boundaries that work across both households without turning technology into a battleground.

Start with a calm, honest conversation between co-parents. Focus on the child's wellbeing, not on who is right or wrong. Agree on a few non-negotiable rules, such as no phones at the dinner table or a consistent bedtime for devices. These shared standards create stability for the child, no matter where they are sleeping that night.

Next, accept that some differences are okay. One parent may be more relaxed about social media, while the other prefers tighter controls. Instead of trying to force identical rules, talk about why each approach exists. Explain to the child that different homes can have different expectations, and that is normal. This teaches flexibility and respect for boundaries.

Finally, use tools wisely. Shared calendars, simple checklists, or a family messaging app can help both parents stay on the same page without constant back-and-forth. Avoid using screen time as a punishment or reward tied to the other parent's home. Keep the focus on safety, connection, and consistency. When both parents communicate openly and put the child first, digital life across two homes becomes much easier to manage.
