A certified parenting coach has raised alarms about what she calls a growing crisis among young men in Generation Z. She describes "stay-at-home son syndrome" as an epidemic that is keeping these men from launching into independent adulthood. According to the coach, many Gen Z men are choosing to remain in their childhood bedrooms well into their twenties and even early thirties, often without jobs, romantic relationships, or clear life goals.
The coach argues that this trend is not simply a matter of laziness or economic hardship. Instead, she points to a combination of factors including overprotective parenting, the rise of online gaming and social media, and a cultural shift away from traditional milestones like moving out and getting married. She notes that many parents, especially mothers, inadvertently enable the behavior by providing meals, laundry, and free rent without requiring any contribution from their adult sons.
The result, she warns, is a generation of young men who lack basic life skills, motivation, and resilience. She urges parents to set firm boundaries and enforce a timeline for independence, even if it means uncomfortable conversations or temporary conflict. Without intervention, she fears the syndrome will only worsen, leaving more young men stuck in a state of prolonged adolescence.
