I might normally say something to him, but in this case, I let the consequences do the talking. My son, a typically decent kid, decided to pull a cruel prank on the new boy who just moved in next door. The family had barely unpacked their boxes when my son, along with a couple of his friends, decided to "welcome" the newcomer by hiding his bicycle and then laughing as the boy searched for it for nearly an hour. I watched from the window, feeling a mix of anger and disappointment. The new kid, maybe 10 years old, looked close to tears.
I did not intervene. Instead, I waited. Later that evening, the boy's father knocked on our door, holding the bike and looking more tired than angry. He explained how his son had been bullied at his old school and how this move was supposed to be a fresh start. My son stood behind me, listening. I made him apologize on the spot, but that was not the real punishment. The real one came when I told him he would have to help the new kid with chores for the next two weekends - mowing, weeding, whatever was needed. No video games, no hanging out with friends.
The first Saturday, my son grumbled but went. By the second weekend, something shifted. He came home talking about how the new kid had a cool collection of comic books and knew a lot about fishing. They ended up planning a trip to the local pond together. Sometimes the best justice is not a lecture or a grounding. It is letting someone experience the natural result of their actions, and then giving them a chance to make it right. The new kid got a friend. My son got a lesson he will not forget.
