Bacterial meningitis can start with symptoms that seem mild, like a headache or a stiff neck, but doctors warn it can escalate to high fevers and unresponsiveness within hours. Teens are particularly at risk because they live in close quarters at school, dorms, or camps, where the bacteria spread through coughing, kissing, or sharing drinks.
The classic signs include sudden high fever, intense headache, and a stiff neck that makes it hard to touch the chin to the chest. Nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light are also common. Parents should watch for confusion or difficulty waking up, which can signal the infection is affecting the brain. A rash that does not fade when pressed with a glass is a red flag for meningococcal meningitis.
Other symptoms include cold hands and feet, rapid breathing, and muscle aches. Seizures or a bulging fontanelle in younger teens can occur. Because the disease moves fast, any combination of these signs warrants immediate medical attention. Vaccines are available for several types of bacterial meningitis, and doctors recommend them for all adolescents. Early treatment with antibiotics can save lives, but delay can lead to brain damage, hearing loss, or death.
